Opportunity for Jersey in UK-Ukraine Agreement

Mar 21, 2023

• The United Kingdom (UK) and Ukraine have today signed a Digital Trade Agreement

• The agreement will support digital trade and investment into the Ukrainian economy

• There is the opportunity for Ministers to have the agreement extended to Jersey at a later date

The United Kingdom and Ukraine have today signed a Digital Trade Agreement, following the launch of negotiations in August 2022.

The agreement will provide participants access to each other’s digital economies, including a commitment not to impose customs duties on electronic transmissions; the cutting of red tape to make trade cheaper, faster, and more secure; and supporting modern trade in services, financial services, agricultural goods, manufactured goods, legal advice, and architecture.

The Assistant Minister for External Relations, Deputy Ian Gorst, said:

“Jersey welcomes this agreement, and we remain committed to standing with the UK in supporting the development of Ukraine’s digital infrastructure whilst their physical infrastructure continues to be under threat.

“Our potential participation would be a positive development for our Island’s economy and digital industries. Like the UK-Singapore agreement, our participation would be proportional to our needs and interests, allowing us to extend the agreement, or specific provisions within it, at a later date.

“We will continue to seek opportunities for Jersey within the UK’s own trade agenda, where it is in our interests to do so.”
