Low Carbon Heating Contractors Invited to Join New Scheme

Jan 13, 2023

Installers of low carbon heating technologies, such as heat pumps, are being invited to join a new Contractor Quality Scheme being launched by the Government of Jersey as part of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap.

The Contractor Quality Scheme is being developed with MCS Service Company (MCSSCo).

Securing approval under the scheme will demonstrate a contractor meets industry standards; highlighting quality, compliance and encouraging the growth of green skills locally.

This is part of the development work under the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, agreed by the States Assembly in April 2022, to support a soon-to-be announced financial incentive which will help Islanders to switch from fossil fuel heating to low carbon systems.

Over the next few months, contractors going through approval under the Contractor Quality Scheme will complete work at a number of pre-chosen pilot properties to demonstrate that they meet the required quality standards and customer service. Only work completed by members of the Contractor Quality Scheme will be eligible to receive Government of Jersey funding under the incentive scheme which is currently being developed.

Those working in the industry who are interested in low carbon heating and in joining the Contractor Quality Scheme should email [email protected] to request an application form. They are also invited to attend an information event on 20 January, with tickets available via Eventbrite.

The administration of the incentive will be supported by Jersey Electricity, which has agreed to partner with the Government of Jersey during the initial phase.

Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Deputy Hilary Jeune, said: “In Jersey, a significant proportion of the greenhouse gases we emit come from the fossil fuelled boilers that heat homes and other buildings. A key priority of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, therefore, is clearly to speed up the switch towards low carbon heating methods.

“This new Contractor Quality Scheme allows local businesses working in the emerging low carbon heating field to demonstrate that they meet the highest quality standards. It also provides a great opportunity for businesses to consider expanding into green heating provision and to upskill their employees.

“We are pleased to be working in partnership with Jersey Electricity, who will be supporting the administration of the incentive during this initial phase.”

Low carbon heating technologies covered by the Contractor Quality Scheme will initially include air source heat pumps, electric flow boilers, electric storage heaters and panel heaters, with additional technologies to be added as the scheme is further rolled out.
