Consumer Survey Results Announced

Nov 15, 2018

Jersey’s retail development strategy is to be informed by an independent survey into shoppers’ perceptions and experience of the island’s retail industry, the results of which have been published today (Thursday 15November).

More than 1,100 people, including islanders and visitors, responded to the survey, which was conducted in September and October using focus groups and online and street surveys.

Among the findings were:

  • Jersey residents primarily want lower costs, a greater choice of discount retailers; improved customer service; later opening hours; Sunday opening; and greater parking availability
  • visitors primarily want later opening, Sunday opening, and more independent shops and street fairs
  • 63%of respondents were in favour of Sunday opening, with a preference for between10am and 4pm year round
  • 34% felt that Jersey retailers were not at all transparent on pricing.

Senator Lyndon Farnham, Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture said: “I’d like to thank everyone who took part in this survey, the objective of which was to understand the key challenges to shopping in Jersey, as well as the potential opportunities for improvement, from a consumer perspective.

“These findings give us an insight into what shoppers want. Having consulted broadly with the industry, we have an understanding of what the industry needs are too. We will now put this information to good use in shaping the retail development strategy. We need to think about the industry in a wider context as we consider how to work in partnership with them to ensure that the vibrancy in the sector continues.”

The survey was commissioned by the States and conducted by independent researchers 4Insight. The results will influence the retail development strategy.

The retail strategy will be agreed, and its implementation will be driven, by the Retail Development Group which includes representatives from the States, the industry, the Chamber of Commerce, Visit Jersey and the Consumer Council.

David Elliott, chairman of the Retail Development Group, said: “We are all working together. Finding the right balance to satisfy all stakeholders’ needs will be a challenge but it is recognised that this will be a true partnership between government and industry.”

The retail development strategy is expected to be published early in the new year.
