Election of Panel and Committee Chairs

The States Assembly met on Tuesday 12 July, to elect the Chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee (PPC), Chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PPC), Chairs of the five Scrutiny Panels and Chair of the Planning Committee.

To begin this morning’s meeting, Deputy Carina Alves and Connétable Karen Shenton Stone of St Martin were nominated for the role of Chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee (PPC). The Assembly voted the Connétable of St Martin as Chair of PPC, with 28 votes in favour. Deputy Alves received 21 votes.

Deputy Lyndsay Feltham was nominated and elected unopposed as the new Chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Deputy Sam Mézec and Connétable Mike Jackson of St Brelade were nominated for the role of Chair of the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel. The Assembly voted Deputy Mézec as Chair of the Panel, with 23 votes in favour. The Connétable of St Brelade received 22 votes. The Chief Minister and Minister for Treasury and Resources were unable to vote.

Deputy Raluca Kovacs and Deputy Moz Scott were nominated for the role of Chair of the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel. The Assembly voted Deputy Scott as Chair of the Panel, with 24 votes in favour. Deputy Kovacs received 19 votes. The Chief Minister; Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture; Minister for External Relations and Financial Services; and Minister for International Development could not vote. In addition, the Minister for Treasury and Resources refrained from voting on account of the anticipated change of portfolios.

Deputy Catherine Curtis was nominated and elected unopposed as the new Chair of the Children, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel.

Deputy Rob Ward and Deputy Steve Luce were nominated for the role of Chair of the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel. The Assembly voted Deputy Luce as Chair of the Panel, with 24 votes in favour. Deputy Ward received 21 votes. The Minister for the Environment; Minister for Housing and Communities; and Minister for Infrastructure were exempt from voting.

To begin this afternoon’s meeting, Deputy Geoff Southern was nominated and elected unopposed as the new Chair of the Health and Social Security Scrutiny Panel.

Connétable Philip Le Sueur of Trinity and Deputy Montfort Tadier were nominated for the role of Chair of the Planning Committee. The Assembly voted the Connétable of Trinity as the Chair of the Committee, with 28 votes in favour. Deputy Tadier received 17 votes and two States Members abstained.

The States Assembly has adjourned until 9:30am on Tuesday 19 July, when States Members will meet to elect Scrutiny Panel and Committee members.
