Nightingale hospital bed module is approved

Apr 23, 2020

A set of the equipment that will be used to care for patients in Jersey’s Nightingale Hospital has been approved by the Health Team.

The bed head module includes all the elements required to provide a patient with the essentials they need including oxygen supply, nurse call button, power and lights. A test module has been built in the hospital, and work is underway to fully install all 180 bed modules, each within its own partitioned area.

The shell of the temporary field hospital was completed at Millbrook Playing Fields on Saturday 18 April and, since then:

  • the floor has been installed
  • the bed module has been installed and formally signed off as suitable by clinical staff
  • the drainage has been completed

Among the work currently underway:

  • the structure surrounding the oxygen base, has been completed, is being built
  • electrics, plumbing, fire alarms and other services are being installed
  • utility connections are being completed

The Inner Road (St Aubins Road) continues to be closed to through-traffic between the junction with La Route de la Haule and the junction with Mont Felard so that the temporary building can be connected to Jersey’s main drainage and electrical structure.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said: “In just over two weeks, since the decision was reached to construct a field hospital for Jersey, the project has progressed fantastically well because of the coordination and team effort from everyone involved.

“We have reached this milestone on time, and I want to thank everyone who’s been involved for their support and hard work which has enabled the project to progress in a timely manner. We have built the Nightingale to ensure Islanders would continue to receive essential care in a hospital setting, should the General Hospital ever reach its capacity. It is about us making sure the Island is as fully prepared as possible.”
