Ministers issue statement on fisheries amnesty

Jan 27, 2021

Please see below a joint statement from the Minster for External Relations and the Minister for the Environment.

A transition period was announced on December 31st, to run up until the end of April 2021, during which those vessels that had held Granville Bay Area permits to fish Jersey waters would continue to have access until the end of April 2021. During this period, the Environment Minister intended to complete the process for issuing licences to all vessels that meet the qualifying criteria under the new UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA).

Following discussion with European Commission and UK partners, a political commitment has been reached to formalise the detail of the amnesty arrangements. Details are now being finalised with the Commission and the UK.

In tandem with these arrangements, Marine Resources officers are working to issue permanent licenses, to apply from 1st May 2021, to French vessels that can provide appropriate evidence of economic activity, as required by the TCA.
