Attendance rates returning to school

Jun 09, 2020

Primary schools in Jersey recorded a 93% attendance rate yesterday for the first day back to school for many students following the closures.

Nearly all primary schools in Jersey recorded extremely high attendance yesterday, with rates ranging from 70% to 100%.

Secondary schools who welcomed back Year 10 students for face-to-face learning also had a high attendance rate of 70 to 90%.

Education Minister Senator Tracey Vallois said: “These figures are really positive. I would like to say a huge thank you and appreciation to all the staff, students and parents for the first phase of return to school in Jersey, which has been successful.

“We are now starting to plan for the next phases of the safe re-opening of nurseries, schools and colleges. This involves meeting with the Science and Technology Advisory Cell (STAC) as well as ongoing engagement with the headteachers, unions and public health experts. I am hoping to make an announcement early next week on the next phase of returning to school.”

Group Director of Education Seán O’ Regan said: “Attendance in all our primary schools has been remarkably high, with almost all our 10 and 11 year olds in Year 6 coming in to school. The happiness and appreciation of the returning pupils, and of their parents and carers, has been mirrored in the older age groups returning to secondary schools. Staff have welcomed the returning children and young people magnificently. The thousands of hits on the numerous ‘welcome back’ videos online, prepared by our communications team, with the assistance of schools have clearly helped.

“Thank you to everyone involved in the first phase of returning year groups. It could not have gone better.”
