Kenya Becomes Key Labour Partner for Jersey, Boosting Talent Mobility
Government of Kenia representative lead a high level delegation in a meeting with the Executive Commitee of Jersey Chamber of Commerce to explore and strengthen employment and trade relations between Kenia and Jersey.
Kenya is set to become a primary recruitment partner for Jersey following a signed MOU between the Government of Kenya (GOK) and GR8. This agreement aims to streamline the movement of skilled Kenyan workers to the Channel Island, recognizing Kenya's deep talent pools in critical sectors.
Key areas of focus for mobility include Information Technology (cybersecurity, software engineering, AI investment), Healthcare, and Hospitality, where Kenyan workers are highly regarded for their skills. The GOK confirmed that Kenyan qualifications are likely to match Jersey's standards and are actively training more candidates in fields like clean energy and preventative medicine.
To ease transitions, Kenyan workers will receive country-specific pre-departure training. Both governments are also discussing improving visa processes and exploring options for longer-term visa arrangements, despite UK border restrictions.
This collaboration highlights the significant talent available in Kenya, presenting mutual opportunities for business and investment.
Digital Jersey is particularly interested in FinTech collaborations.
Separately, DFDS noted interest in green energy initiatives and the recent growth in Kenyan seafarers, with 7,000 currently on ships.
Both nations expressed excitement about this partnership, bridging "the island and the savannah."
