Mourant Snorkel educational programme hailed a major success

The events are taking place on Tuesday 8 July at Bouley Bay, starting at 9.15am and Thursday 10 July at Portelet Bay, starting at 12.15pm. This is a unique opportunity to capture the magic of ocean education in action, and hear directly from the next generation of marine ambassadors.

Blue Marine Foundation is celebrating the huge success of its Snorkel Trail Education Programme in Jersey as it marks the 15th anniversary of the charity. The programme, which was originally established as a two-year project, is now well into its fourth year and growing to meet increasing demand, thanks to the support of community partner Mourant.

The free education outreach programme aims to foster a connection between Jersey’s younger generation and the local marine environment, inviting pupils to a classroom-based lesson, pool session and a guided tour of either Snorkel Portlet or Snorkel Bouley trails. Blue Marine has welcomed over 1,000 children from each of the island’s primary schools since the programme began in 2022.

Surveys from the attending students revealed that 2% had never seen the sea before, and 35% had never been snorkelling. Following participation in the programme, pupils were no longer scared of the sea and marine life and actively wanted to change their habits to protect the marine environment. 78% of teachers said pupils talked more about marine issues since attending and nine per cent noticed a tangible change in children’s stewardship of the oceans.

Freddie Watson, Blue Marine Foundation Channel Islands Project Manager, said:

“The Snorkel Trail and its associated education programme continue to have a meaningful impact in Jersey. It’s not just about increasing the number of students who engage with the charity but giving them the chance to connect with the natural environment in a way that’s engaging and memorable.

“We’re creating a more ocean‑literate generation, who feel a real sense of ownership and pride in their local seas. By nurturing this connection early, we help ensure long‑term care for Jersey’s precious marine ecosystems. We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of Mourant which allows us to develop this programme to continue to reach as many young children as possible.”

Mourant has partnered with Blue Marine Foundation on this educational journey, continuing to support the charity as a sponsor in line with the firm’s own Ocean Pledge.

Dan Birtwistle, Jersey Managing Partner at Mourant, said:

“We recognise that education is one of the most powerful ways to achieve positive change, so this programme has real importance for our community and those who will become the future ambassadors of our seas. It’s encouraging to see the programme continue to have such a fundamental impact on our children and we are proud to be supporting and championing the ongoing work of Blue Marine Foundation.”

As the Government of Jersey sets out its vision for Fort Regent as a vibrant hub for leisure and culture, one of the major anchor features of the transformation is a brand-new six-screen cinema which will replace the existing ten-screen cinema at the Waterfront. It was one of the highest rated activities, scoring 8 out of 10 in the over 16s survey, and 87% support from the 11-16 age group.
