Christmas Trading: Sunday Permit Rules Remain for Jersey Retailers

Jersey retailers planning to open on Sundays, including during the crucial upcoming Christmas period, are reminded that the current regulations regarding Sunday trading permits remain fully in effect. The Government of Jersey's Retail and Visitor Economy Department has issued an update, clarifying that despite ongoing discussions about potential changes to the Shops (Regulation of Opening and Deliveries) Law, no immediate alterations to the application process or fees will occur.

Businesses wishing to trade on Sundays must continue to apply for a permit from their respective Parish, following the established procedures. This applies universally, including for the busy festive season.

The Minister for Sustainable Economic Development recently announced intentions to rescind the Shops (Regulation of Opening and Deliveries) Law. However, this is a multi-stage process. A proposition to repeal the law is expected to be lodged and debated by the States Assembly later this year. If approved, Royal Assent from the Privy Council would then be sought in early 2026.

"The current Law will remain in force until at least the end of 2025, and all existing requirements still apply," stated the Department in its update. "There are no changes to the process, or to the fees payable, to be aware of at this time."

The department has indicated that it will provide further updates as the process of potentially repealing the law progresses. In the interim, retailers are urged to ensure they comply with all existing requirements to avoid any disruptions to their Sunday trading plans.
