From summer sun to sharper focus – how the Jersey Chamber of Commerce keeps your voice at the heart of decision-making
The flip flops have been packed away and the school bags are back in action. Summer may have slipped into the rear-view mirror for another year but the Jersey Chamber of Commerce has not been on holiday when it comes to championing the Island’s business community. While many were enjoying the sunshine the Chamber was hard at work engaging with Ministers and government departments to make sure your voice was heard loud and clear.
For those who might be wondering what exactly the Chamber does a quick refresher is in order. As the world’s oldest English-speaking Chamber of Commerce we have been representing, connecting and informing our members for over two centuries. Our mission remains as relevant now as it did when we began: to create the best possible environment for businesses of all sizes and sectors to thrive.
Over the summer months the Chamber held weekly discussions with key government departments to ensure that members’ concerns and priorities stayed firmly on the agenda. This included pushing for greater clarity on major capital projects so that businesses can plan ahead with confidence. We know that infrastructure investment is not just about bricks and mortar but about creating opportunities, improving connectivity and boosting the Island’s long-term competitiveness.
Employment law has also been a hot topic. The Chamber has worked to ensure that in employment tribunals there is a fair and workable mechanism to deal with vexatious claims. This protects employers while still safeguarding the rights of employees and keeps the focus on resolving genuine disputes. We have also successfully championed the reintroduction of trainee rates which will help young people gain valuable experience and enable employers to bring fresh talent into their organisations.
Our engagement is not limited to formal meetings and consultations. We are constantly in conversation with Ministers and civil servants throughout the year to provide insight, feedback and practical suggestions. This ongoing dialogue means that when new policies are developed they are more likely to reflect the realities of running a business in Jersey. In between that we've met with overseas ambassadors and continued our engagement closer to home with the other crown dependencies.
For our members this level of representation is only part of the value the Chamber offers. We keep you informed on policy developments, legislative changes and economic trends so you can stay ahead of the curve. Our events and networking opportunities bring together business leaders, innovators and decision-makers, creating a community where ideas and partnerships flourish. We are a place to learn, to share experiences and to find support from others who understand the challenges and opportunities that come with doing business on the Island.
As the new season begins and the pace picks up again now is the perfect time to make the most of your Chamber membership. The summer might be over but the work of building a stronger business community never stops. Whether you are a long-standing member or thinking about joining Chamber, there has never been a better moment to be part of an organisation that combines history, influence and a commitment to securing a vibrant future for Jersey’s economy.
