Insights from our President, Lee Madden, June 2026
As President of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce, I believe our future government and its ministers must embrace a more collaborative approach to economic policy.
Jersey’s economy faces both opportunities and challenges, and the key to unlocking growth lies in cooperation across departments.
For too long, siloed decision-making has led to policies that, while well-meaning, sometimes work at cross purposes. We need a unified effort, where ministers and officers from economic development work with every other ministry in tandem so that matters of the economy can be addressed as a collective.
Imagine, for example, a government where investment in digital infrastructure is considered alongside education and skills policy, ensuring our workforce is equipped for the opportunities a modern economy demands. Or where decisions on transport, housing and the planning of commercial space are made with business growth in mind, helping people, services and goods move more efficiently across the island. When ministers work across portfolios in this way, policy becomes more joined-up, more practical, and ultimately more effective in supporting economic growth.
Equally important is avoiding policies that stifle growth. Too often, new regulations are introduced without fully considering their economic impact. This can create uncertainty for businesses, discouraging investment. A collaborative government would scrutinise proposals through an economic lens, asking: will this policy help or harm growth? By seeking input from the business community early on, they can shape regulations that protect the public interest without unnecessary red tape.
At the Chamber, we stand ready to partner with government. We offer insights from businesses large and small, across sectors. We know what’s working on the ground, and where barriers exist. Our ask is simple: involve us in the policymaking process. Let’s co-create solutions that foster innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and position Jersey as a dynamic place to do business.
The call to action for future politicians is clear: lead with collaboration, not isolation. Embed economic thinking into every policy decision. Engage early with business, listen actively, and be prepared to adapt. Most importantly, have the courage to challenge policies, your own and others’, if they risk undermining Jersey’s economic resilience.
The future economic success of our island depends on it. With a spirit of partnership between government, business, and the community, we can create a thriving, resilient economy that benefits all. That is the vision we must strive for.
