International Women’s Day event to inspire women to stand for election
This International Women’s Day, Saturday 8 March, Vote.je is hosting a special event to celebrate Jersey’s female political pioneers and inspire more women to stand for election to the States Assembly – Jersey’s elected parliament.
The event, ‘Their Legacy, Your Future’, will be held in the States Building and is in two parts. Firstly, attendees will hear from current female States Members in a panel discussion focusing on their experiences in campaigning to get elected and working as a States Member. This will be followed by a Q&A session, where attendees can put their own questions directly to States Members.
The second part of the event features a behind-the-scenes tour of the States Chamber. The tour will give attendees first-hand experience of being in the Chamber as well as providing the opportunity to learn about the trailblazing women of Jersey’s political past, including the Island’s first ever female States Member – Ivy Forster, and the first woman to stand for election to the States Assembly – Caroline Trachy.
Vote.je Campaign Manager, Emily Thomas said: ‘We’ve seen over the course of previous elections that both the number of women standing for election and those successfully getting elected to the States Assembly keeps on increasing. International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate this and encourage more female candidates to come forward in future elections and be inspired to make a difference in our community.’
Tickets for the event are free of charge. Bookings should be made via Vote.je’s Eventbrite page as soon as possible to secure one of the limited places on offer.
