Tourism Strategy is Due for Delivery by the End of 2023

Feb 20, 2023

The Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel questioned the Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Deputy Kirsten Morel, in a Quarterly Public Hearing.

The Panel heard that work to develop a Tourism Strategy is currently in progress and aims to address the decline in registered tourist beds.  The Strategy is due for delivery by the end of 2023 and is to be developed in consultation with stakeholders within the Tourism industry.

Additional findings from the hearing include:

•    The Minister questioned the Comptroller and Auditor General’s finding regarding the ambition of the Arts and Heritage Strategies, and contemplated funding from sources in addition to the 1% funding offered by Government such as corporate sponsorship.

•    There are no plans for Jersey to host a large-scale sports event such as the Island Games. Accommodating such events would be a challenge, partly owing to lack of availability of tourist beds.

•    The Minister is keen to encourage suppliers to Jersey to use a Southern supply route and considers its operation to be commercially viable and unlikely to risk the commercial viability of the supply route from the North.

Chair of the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel, Deputy Moz Scott, said “At a time when operating business in the Island has become more challenging, the Panel will continue to question how realistic and deliverable government strategies to support economic growth and economic sustainability truly are. The Panel welcome engagement from all parts of the business community in carrying out our work.”
