Newly Elected politicians Attend Commonwealth Coaching

Nov 08, 2018

Following Jersey’s General Election in May, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is today delivering a professional development programme aimed at newly elected members (politicians) of the States Assembly (Jersey’s Parliament).

The aim of the programme is to help new members of the States Assembly to become more confident and skilled in making the Assembly of Jersey more effective, accountable and inclusive; while strengthening Jersey’s relations with the UK and other Commonwealth jurisdictions.

The programme is being delivered by a number of parliamentary professionals from the UK, Isle of Man and Jersey, including The Rt Hon. Lord Haselhurst who joined the UK House of Lords in 2018 and served as an MP for over 40 years until 2017.

The event is taking place in the States Building from 9am today until 9th November, 2018 and sessions will focus on a range of priority areas identified by CPA Jersey and CPA UK, including:

  • expectations and responsibilities of Parliamentarians
  • how to make an impact in the Chamber
  • international parliamentary outreach

The Rt. Hon. Lord Haselhurst comments on the event, saying, “Having started my political career back in 1970, I am honoured and privileged to have spent over 40 years in British politics.  I very much look forward to meeting Jersey’s newly elected States members who are just at the beginning of their political career.  I hope the CPA programme will help strengthen their technical skills to deliver their parliamentary responsibility effectively and efficiently.”

The CPA is funded by Commonwealth parliaments and exists to bring together Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff from across the Commonwealth to exchange ideas and best practice.  The Association particularly focuses on promoting good governance and training new parliamentarians.  Jersey has been a member of the Association since 1961.
