Call for Views on Proposal to Freeze Fuel Duty

Nov 03, 2022

The Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel will be present on pop-up stands this week to ask Islanders for their views on the Government of Jersey’s proposal to freeze road fuel duty in 2023, as part of its review of the Government Plan 2023-26.

The Panel will be asking Islanders to share their views on whether:

•    Freezing road fuel duty whilst Government maintains its commitment to pay 9p per litre to the Climate Emergency Fund strikes the right balance between addressing the cost of living and helping Jersey to reach carbon neutrality

•    The Government Plan should list what specific initiatives will be funded through the Climate Emergency Fund in 2023

•    The Government Plan should show precisely what funding has been allocated to the Minister for Housing and Communities to deliver housing-related priorities as outlined in his Ministerial Plan

To discuss these points, Chair Deputy Steve Luce, Vice Chair Deputy Rob Ward and Mary Le Hegarat of the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Panel, will be at the following locations in St Helier:

•    Deputy Rob Ward at Grand Marché (Co-op St Helier) on Thursday 3 November between 4pm – 5pm

•    Deputy Mary Le Hegarat at Brooks Street (opposite Voisins, King Street) on Friday 4 November between 10am - 12pm

•    Deputy Steve Luce at Brooks Street (opposite Voisins, King Street) on Friday 4 November between 12pm – 2pm

Chair of the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Panel, Deputy Steve Luce, said:

“We understand that the average person will not have read the Government Plan and that’s ok. It’s important that we get out in the community and listen to the public’s views, especially when it’s about issues that directly impact their lives. Fuel duty and the housing market are two massive talking points for Islanders, and we want to make sure that the Panel represent their views ahead of the States’ debate in December”

The panel aims to conclude its review and present its findings to the States’ Assembly ahead of the States’ debate on the Proposed Government Plan 2023-26, which is scheduled for 13 December 2022.
