Fiscal stimulus funding given to sports initiatives

Apr 16, 2021

Several sports projects have been given funding from the Government’s Fiscal Stimulus Fund which will help the recovery of sport in Jersey and increase the active population of the Island.

Funding of up to £1.9m has been allocated to enhance sporting facilities in the Island. The funding is for the following projects:

  • Refurbishment of facilities at Grainville Cricket Ground
  • Additional Padel courts and coaching at St Clements Recreation Ground
  • Refurbishment of the Jersey Spartan clubhouse to create enhanced indoor training facilities
  • Rebuild of the pavilion and changing rooms at FB Fields
  • Updating and maintaining leased land and facilities at the Jersey Racecourse

Funding is also being given to develop two projects within the Inspiring Active Places strategy (IAP) of which:

  • £1.95m will be allocated to Springfield
  • £3.15m will be allocated to Oakfield

This funding will help kick start the Inspiring Active Places project and enable Government to start work on creating alternative facilities in preparation for when sports facilities are moved out of Fort Regent.

Assistant Minister for Economic Development with responsibility for Sport, Deputy Hugh Raymond said: “I am thrilled that sport remains a top priority for the government and this demonstrates our commitment to investing in the future of sporting in the Island.”

“This funding will ensure we can deliver great facilities and it is hoped this will help us reach our goal of encouraging 10% more Islanders to become active.

“I very much look forward to sharing updates on individual projects in the coming months.”

Chair of Jersey Sport, Phil Austin said: “We are extremely pleased to see a number of sports clubs and associations receive funding from the Fiscal Stimulus Fund, which will enable them to add to or refurbish their current facilities.

“These significant upgrades will form part of a wider programme of improving the Island’s sports infrastructure, with a view to encouraging more Islanders to participate in sport or some form of physical activity, and so enhance their health and mental wellbeing.”
