Update from Chamber 07/04/2020

Apr 07, 2020

Tuesday update from Chamber

A non-stop day of communicating with many areas of commerce.

News

You may have seen the @Jerseychamber expressing concern today regarding the lack of co-funding and meaningful dialogue between Government and two large businesses that are critical to our local infrastructure: Jersey Gas and Ferryspeed.

I have personally been discussing with the Group MD of Island Energy Group and the MD of Ferryspeed since early this morning, their concerns and issues. Ferryspeed volume is and will drop further and they do not understand why they are not being supported by co-funding. Jersey Gas called Chamber eleven days ago, to ask for help to connect with someone in Government, as Government had not discussed anything with them. It started well, but since, they describe the it as ‘an absence of engagement’. Both are valued Chamber members who are very critical of the response they are getting from Government. We sent out the following tweets:

Chamber is trying to understand why some Critical Infrastructures to Jersey are not being co-funded by CoM &

@GovJersey Jersey Chamber members @JsyGasOfficial & Ferryspeed are critical to Jersey. They tell us, @GovJersey

is not listening or making decisions. #CriticalServices

and:

We were assured that a Critical Strategy was in place. 11 days ago @JsyGasOfficial asked US to find someone in

@GovJersey to talk to & now it’s an ‘absence of engagement’. Ferryspeed say they’ll maintain lifeline in spite lack of Govt. support. We’ll keep asking questions.

Our hope is that clarity on who will get co-funding will be released as early as possible before the weekend. Given it is the Easter weekend, it would be appropriate for businesses to have some reassurance and information, before heading into that period.

Scrutiny

Today, both myself and President Jennifer Carnegie engaged with the Corporate and International Affairs Scrutiny panel, where we gave our accounts of our interactions and assessments of the Government reaction to the crisis. When the transcripts are available, I’ll make them available via a link. Any businesses who would wish to feed into their work, with their own experiences, should email k.morel2@gov.je

Coronavirus – Business Disruption Loan Guarantee

The Government has announced a series of business support measures to help preserve as many Islanders’ jobs as possible during the COVID-19 epidemic and maintain our key economic infrastructure. The aim of this support is to maintain cash flow so that people can remain in employment and businesses do not have to close permanently. Excellent advise and help from Jersey Business can be found HERE.

When to call 999

Jersey’s emergency services are reminding Islanders to think before they dial 999. This is after an increase in calls over the last couple of weeks, which is putting further pressure particularly on the Jersey Ambulance Service. Read more HERE.
