Minimum Wage to Rise on 1st April 2020

Mar 06, 2020

The Government of Jersey is reminding employers and employees that the minimum wage will increase by 3.8 per cent from 1 April 2020.

The hourly rate of £8.32 will apply to all employees aged 16 and over. It represents a 30 pence per hour increase on the current minimum wage of £8.02 per hour.

The increase is based on a recommendation made by the Employment Forum on 9 October 2019 to the Minister for Social Security, Deputy Judy Martin. In making a recommendation, the Forum is required to consult and consider the effect on the economy and on competitiveness, as well as any additional factors which the Minister specifies.

The Forum, which is independent of Government, reviewed a range of evidence, including data on retail prices and the overall economy, statistical information on average earnings, responses it received to an online survey, and representations made by relevant stakeholders.

Minister for Social Security, Deputy Judy Martin, said: “This increase follows two earlier increases in 2019, which were staggered to allow employers to prepare for the change. This increase will benefit the estimated 2,300 Islanders who earn the minimum wage in industries ranging from hospitality, to agriculture, to construction.

I’m grateful to the Forum for undertaking a thorough and comprehensive consultation process and for submitting a reasoned and evidence-based recommendation.”
