New Bursary Route for Trainee Teachers

Jul 01, 2022

A new bursary for graduates to do on-Island training to become secondary school teachers has been introduced by the Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES) Department today.

The bursary will support trainee teachers to the value of £25,000 as part of the Jersey Graduate Teacher Training Programme (JGTTP). The application process will start on 1 July, and placements will begin in late October.

Priority is being given to specific areas of the curriculum where secondary schools and colleges are finding it harder to recruit. Trainee routes will include Maths, Science, Computing and Business Studies. This follows analysis of employment patterns in schools this year.

Schools and colleges across the British Isles are experiencing long-term challenges with teacher training and teacher recruitment. The bursary hopes to identify its first cohort of locally qualified graduates this summer so that they are trained, qualified and ready to apply for work in Jersey schools starting next September.

The JGTTP bursary route is open to Islanders who already have a relevant or related subject degree and a desire to teach and work with children and young people aged 11 to 18 years old. Some candidates may be considering a career change after a number of years working in another field. Some may be recent graduates who wish to take this chance to train locally rather than paying to qualify through a UK university.

Trainees will be allocated to a department in two local schools for a major and minor placement and will train alongside an experienced teacher with the support of a dedicated Mentor for three school terms.

The formal application ‘Trainee Teacher (Secondary)’ can be accessed on Job details (gov.je)
