Minimum wage consultation 2022

Jul 22, 2022

Minimum wage consultation 2022 - additional questions for consideration by the Employment Forum

The deadline for responses to the Employment Forum consultation on the future level of the minimum wage in Jersey has been extended from 31 July to 5 August 2022.

The Social Security Minister has asked the Forum to consider an additional question on an initial rise in the level of the main minimum wage rate to £10 an hour from 1 October 2022, and to express its views to the Minister. This is a question which did not form part of the original survey.

The Minister has also asked the Forum to consider whether further action will be needed in January 2023, which would include exploring the question of a rise in short time to the minimum wage target agreed by the previous States Assembly of two-thirds of the average median wage, which would equate to an hourly rate – on current estimates – of just under £10.80.

The Forum invites those organisations and individuals who have already contributed their views on the minimum wage rate – and those who are yet to do so - to consider these additional questions, and in particular asks for views on the appropriate future hourly rates between the current hourly rate of £9.22 and £10.80. The original survey will not be amended, but views can be sent to the Secretary to the Forum, Nic Turner, at [email protected]

The additional questions for respondents’ consideration are:

  • “Do you agree or disagree that the Government should take steps to increase the main minimum wage rate to £10 an hour from 1 October 2022? Please give your reasons.”
  • “Do you agree or disagree that the Government should move as quickly as possible to an hourly rate figure that corresponds to two-thirds of the average median wage – currently around £10.80? Please give your reasons.”
